My Classmate Died

I got an email this morning from my old best friend. I never hear from her, so I figured she was inviting me to some Christmas party that she's having next weekend or something. Not that I would attend, but she seems to write to me about random things.

For those just joining me, my old best friend is a lawyer in DC, and I believe has two kids now, and is married. We stopped talking when she emailed me a few years back and said she was like 6 or 7 months pregnant. I got upset because she could have told me when she first found out, but I guess I wasn't important enough to be on the A-list. I think I emailed back 'Congratulations!' and that was it. hee hee. So..that was pretty much the end of our communication. She also usually sends me a Christmas card with a picture of the baby. (I guess this year, I'll get a picture with two babies.)

Anyway, she emailed me this morning to tell me that one of our high school classmates died on Nov. 29. This person was the Valedictorian of our class, Honor Society President, and was always Ms. Smarty Pants. In our Junior year of high school, she found out she had some disease that was related to the lymph nodes. I forget what it is called, but she had to take this medicine which made her puffy and fat. I'm guessing that is what she died from, but my old best friend didn't have any details regarding her cause of death. I looked in the Obituaries of the paper, and it said that she had her funeral services at my family church. I was surprised to read that because I never saw her at my church, and wonder why she had her services there. It's a nice church, so I don't blame her family for having them there, it's just odd that it was at my family church. I emailed my mom to see if she knew anything about the services.
In high school, I remember thinking that she wasn't going to live too long, but I'm surprised she lived to be 31. It's 15 years longer than I expected, I guess. I am such a dork. I have no idea how long people with her condition live, but I just had a feeling that she wouldn't be around for very long. I know that in school she wanted to be a doctor, but I have no idea what she ended up doing besides going to college at U of MD. Maybe she was a doctor. I'll never know, I guess. Anyway, it sucks when your classmates die, and you find out about it. RIP Karyn.
