BS Friday

Do you think this is true or false?

When I was in 5th grade we got to sign up for different activities in the afternoon. For example, some could take drama, or a special art class, or play an instrument. I guess the classes were only about an hour, but it was cool that we got to do something different. I signed up for drama.

Our teacher was this fat, short lady who thought she was Miss Drama. She always spoke very loudly (I guess she was projecting her voice), and she was a total wannabe. My friend Julie and I sat together every time we had class, and we just made fun of being in there. The teacher's pet was this girl named Simone. She was always so "proper." She had good posture, nicely combed hair and was a total goody goody. Well, the drama teacher loved her. Simone always got the lead roles in the plays we read or performed, and I told Julie that I was going to raise my hand and speak up the next time Simone got the lead in the play.

Well, the play we were presenting for the kindergarteners was "Wizard of Oz." Of course, Simone got the lead. I asked the teacher why Simone always got the lead, and why she never gave anyone else a chance. The teacher then said 'Well, would you like the lead?' And you know what I said? 'YES!' Julie and I were dying. I couldn't believe I was going to be the lead. Simone was going to be my understudy for this big event. Simone-an understudy. She probably cried that night when she got home.

I was pretty excited. I finally got to be the lead in a play. Of course, every time we went to class, I never knew my lines. Simone knew all of them, but I just didn't take the time learning them. The play was coming up in a few days, and I had a lot of memorizing to do.

The stage was set, the students were seated, and it was time for my big debut. I was ok for the first couple acts, but I never learned the rest of the lines. My teacher kept yelling out lines to me from behind the curtain. By intermission, I had been replaced by Simone. Again, Julie and I just laughed about it. I didn't really want to be the lead in the play. It was the principle that the teacher never chose anyone else. I think I got my point across though, and that's the important thing. Simone still had her day in the sun, and I had mine.
