Father's Day 2005
I actually did a good thing for my father yesterday. I went to visit him and my mom, gave presents that were above and beyond, and I had a nice dinner with the family. Ed and I stayed for a total of 4 hours. That's a long time for me. I usually stay for an hour at the most.
I gave my dad a copy of "Ray", and my sister bought him something that I'm supposed to contribute 20 bucks for, but I don't really know what it is. She wasn't there to give it to him. I also had Ed take two pictures of me and Daddy. My hair looked nice and I looked pretty nice, so I thought it was a good time to take a picture.
Dinner was supposed to start at 6, but my mom was running late, so we didn't actually eat until 8:30 or so. It was so late, but the food was good. We had cornish hens, collard greens, some pasta salad with shrimp (I'm allergic to shrimp, so I could only look at that), rice, biscuits, candied sweet potatoes, and fresh iced tea. Mmmm..I got to bring home leftovers, and I'm going to eat peach cobbler for my lunch dessert today.
The sad thing about yesterday is that it's obvious that my parents are finally getting older. My mom is having a surgery soon on her esophogus. She has a bunch of acid that won't go away, so if she eats too much, she has to yak. It's really disgusting, but there's not much she can do. We ate too late so she couldn't eat, but she had to keep running to the bathroom. She was pretty sneaky about it though. My dad wanted to show us how to work the DVD player and he was bent down on the ground, and it looked like he was having trouble getting back up. I told him not to get on the ground anymore. He laughed and said 'I try not to.' My dad is 66, and my mom is *cough64cough* 21. Until this year, I guess you would think they were maybe in their 50s because they're pretty cool, never have to go to the doctors, don't take pills and just seem like younger old people. I guess we all get older, and it's just time for them to start showing their age. It's weird.
Anyway, I was happy that none of my siblings were there because I got all the attention (ha ha). My sisters called and talked my dad's ear off. I have no idea what they were on the phone talking about for so long. My brother did stop by but it was for about 10 minutes. Just long enough to eat peach cobbler and give Daddy a card. I hope my dad enjoyed it as much as I did.
