A Post About My Mother
I'm going to try to make this short.
I went to PA yesterday to have Mom-mom assessed for her assisted living home (nursing home, whatever). My mom rode up there with me. We had a nice time talking and doing stuff mothers and daughters do.
On the way home, we were talking about my cousins and aunts who don't have kids, and my mom told me that they couldn't have kids and how it kind of runs on my dad's side of the family. I suddenly said "I wonder if I can have kids." My mom was silent, and I was silent. And then I said "SIKE!!" and started laughing. My mom said "I'm not even going there." HA!!HA!!
Then I was telling her how a lot of moms are always pressuring their daughters to have kids and stuff, and I told her that I love how she never pressures us. She then told me that she would have liked to be a young grandmother. She had such big plans for her grandkids. She was going to take them to Europe, and go to Disneyland, and do really cool things like she did with us, except she would do them with her grandkids. She would want to take the kids for an entire summer, too. That's pretty cool. But..ever since her stomach problems (her stomach was moving up to her chest and she coughs a lot now and can't really eat much, etc..), she's been really tired, and doesn't think she can do the fun things she would have liked. It made me a little sad, but I didn't ask her if she was sad about it. I'm sure she'll get to go somewhere with grandkids one day, if any of us have kids, but it won't be how she planned.
On the other hand, my dad loves kids (and dogs), so if my sisters were to pop a baby out tomorrow, he'd be so happy. But then again, he's fine with watching the dogs.
Oh, and one funny about my Mom-mom. She has never known how to drive a car. She has an ID card, but it expired in '04, so we stopped by the DMV/MVA. I said "Mom-Mom, don't you just want to try taking the driving test for fun with my car (a stick shift)? I think you should go for it." She said "Oh, no. I never drove." And I said "I know. It would be the perfect opportunity." Then we got there and the line was super long (of course). I told her on the way home, 'Well, it was probably for the best that you didn't take the driving test. It's too hot for us to sit outside and wait for you to pass.' She just started laughing, and so did my mom. I know they think I'm crazy, but I'm thinking maybe next year she'll do it. :)
