Carhartts
I think I spelled that wrong, but I bought a pair of Carhartt bib overalls last winter. I was going to York, PA for a swap meet, and the temperature was supposed to be 40 degrees for a high. I bought the pants so that I could ride and still be super duper warm. I thought that would be the trick. I ended up not wearing them because they were kind of bulky, but I would still like to try to wear them sometime while riding and see how things go.
Anyway, ever since I got these bib overalls, I have been a snow shoveling queen. They keep me so warm, and you don't even have to wear a lot underneath. On Sunday, I wore a pair of jeans and a long sleeve tshirt. When I was done, I was almost soaked through my tshirt, and I was SO hot. I don't know what they do to make those clothes so warm (could it be the duck lining?), but whatever it is really works. I have no problems shoveling all day. I am now a true believer in Carhartts.
I see the construction guys and outdoor workers wearing their Carhartts, and I feel like I'm in a club with them. I know the secret to staying warm and working outside, and others don't. It's so cool. Actually, when I first decided to buy a pair, I saw a man in Home Depot wearing them, and I asked where he got them and whether he liked them or not. He gave me the scoop saying that sometimes they sell them at Home Depot, but they are cheaper at Sunny's Surplus. When I went to Sunny's they were on sale. Mine are dark brown (I didn't want the boring yellow), and they have a brown lining. The pants come down to the floor and they have long zippers on the side near the feet, so I can put my boots on before or after I put my overalls on. That has come in really handy because sometimes I forget what to put on first. These things are so durable too. I could fall down and get dragged by a car, and I don't think I would have road rash. Unfortunately, I'm not willing to experiment.
So, that's my pubic service announcement for the day. If you are looking for something that will keep you warm, and keep the water away from you in adverse conditions, and don't care about looking a little dorky, get some Carhartts. You won't regret it.

HAHAHA! I totally laughed when you said the thing about being dragged by the car. I was imagining a giant brown Peachy all stuffed with multiple layers and her bib overalls complete with scarf and hat being dragged all over town through the snow and making it out okay :P
i am so glad i don't need to wear those... to shovel snow. eep.
we used to live in NY when i was a kid... and my dad would always make me shovel. and it SUCKED.
You have to shovel snow at least once in your lifetime and then you aren't missing out. The worse is when you're shoveling and your neighbor has a snowblower and he comes out after you, but finishes before you. It is pretty self-gratifying when you're done.
I think I'd kill myself if I lived in New England. That's WAY too much snow for me.
